The
mainstream media occasionally condescends to report on an act of
police brutality which has either been captured by a vigilant citizen
or been leaked onto the internet. But in the wake of these 'isolated
incidents' has flowed a torrent of videos which clearly demonstrate
that this behaviour is far from that of a few bad apples. Unfortunately,
it is very likely that only those who make it onto CNN or the BBC
will ever be prosecuted.
To many, the scenes captured in these videos will come as something
of a reality shock - possibly accompanied by a compelling belief that
the victims were somehow 'asking for it' or that we don't know what crimes
thay might have been involved in. But it is not the duty of the police
to mete out summary justice. If a criminal is in custody, the police
have a duty of care - and, as these videos illustrate, some victims are
violently assaulted not even remotely resisting arrest.
